How to keep your focus where it needs to be, even in the face of boredom and distractions!
In the interests of transparency, maintaining focus and energy where it can have the biggest impact is my key development area at the moment.
Have you ever found that, like me, keeping your energy and attention where it needs to be when you have a lot to get through can be a bit of a challenge sometimes?
I thought I’d share a couple of ideas I’m currently finding helpful and would love to know your focus-keeping strategies too if you’re willing to share?
You’ve probably heard that some scientists talk about left vs right brain activity?
The theory is that when we are using logic and reason, we are tapping into left brain activity and when we are being creative and accessing our emotions, this is right brain’s doing.
Most of us find that we can get a bit tired if we use predominantly one side over the other, particularly if it’s not the preferred side for us. Interestingly we can use this knowledge to keep us fresh throughout the day while we are studying or report writing or whatever.
One way is to perform activities which channel the opposite sides of the brain alternately. So, if I’m writing a report, I spend around 25 minutes writing facts and figures before consciously switching to adding in some pictures and images and channelling my creativity into the document for the next 25 mins. I also use the Pomodoro Technique to focus in short bursts and this is a brilliant way to help me manage my energy and concentrate my attention.
Another tool I use is the mind mapping approach which harnesses the power of each brain half equally. Tony Buzan has published a few books around how to mind map if this is a new concept to you.
Over to you!
